MOUNT CLEMENS — Everybody loves an underdog story, except maybe the teams that become a victim of circumstance in the league.

GROSSE POINTES — It was a disappointing few years for Grosse Pointe United gymnastics in the state finals category, but the gymnasts were finally able to make their mark this year.

ROCHESTER HILLS — In what almost mirrored the 2022 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division I State Finals, Rochester Adams girls skiing shined at the MHSAA state finals Feb. 27 at Schuss Mountain.

NOVI — An already established dynasty in Division 1 hockey, Detroit Catholic Central continues to add hardware to its trophy room each year no matter what coach is at the helm or what numbers are on the backs of the jerseys.

FARMINGTON — Depth was the topic of conversation revolving around Farmington United gymnastics entering the 2023 season.

STERLING HEIGHTS/SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Utica Henry Ford II had been longing for a spot at the top of the Macomb Area Conference-White, and in 2023, behind a strong cast of experience and youth, the team came for more than just that.

UTICA — Basketball has been buzzing at Utica High School, and rightfully so.

TROY — Troy Athens has been the master of consistency with an 11-10 record the last two seasons, including this season, but the 2023 year also showcased improvement towards the future of the program.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP/UTICA/STERLING HEIGHTS — Following a successful dance season for Eisenhower High School, Stevenson-Ford United and Utica High School, all three teams were spotlighted on national stages in Orlando, Florida.

MADISON HEIGHTS — Hard-nosed, blue-collar, physical, determined: They’re all things that represent and can be expected from Madison Heights Madison High School boys basketball.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS — If the stage of a state finals hockey game wasn’t enough to bring the crowd to their feet, a rematch of the 2021 Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 State Finals game was enough momentum to create an electric environment.

ROSEVILLE — Injuries are a part of the game, but some teams catch the injury bug more than others, and it’s a heavy obstacle to overcome.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — The 2023 Macomb Area Conference-White champions had momentum on their side going into the Michigan High School Athletic Association Region 6 championship at Skore Lanes on Feb. 24, but the field of competition at regionals was loaded with talent.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — St. Clair Shore native Derek Charbonneau’s competitive spirit is highlighted through his gymnastics competitions, but even more so in the classroom.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Senior Ava Costales has etched her name into the books as one of the premier athletes to attend Lakeview High School in St. Clair Shores with her play on the softball field, but her athletic abilities go beyond that.
