Warren woman faces charges after Detroit woman is hit, killed by vehicle

WARREN — A woman from Warren is facing charges following the death of a Detroit woman from a vehicular crash.

At approximately 12:58 a.m. Aug. 28, Detroit police were dispatched to the area of Mack Avenue and Field Street in Detroit for an initial report of a vehicle striking two pedestrians.

Upon arrival, officers found that 43-year-old Lorena Washington and a 61-year-old man from Detroit had been struck by a vehicle, according to a press release from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. 

The victims were both transported to a local hospital for treatment, where Washington succumbed to her injuries and died, the press release said.

Shacuria Latrice Nicholson, 20, of Warren, is facing charges after the crash. Police say she was the vehicle’s driver.

On Aug. 30, Nicholson was arraigned in 36th District Court in Detroit by District Court Judge Laura Echartea. Nicholson is being charged with one count of operating while license suspended causing death, one count of operating while license suspended, one count of moving violation causing death, one count of moving violation causing serious impairment and one count of a minor operating with any blood alcohol content.

If convicted, Nicholson faces a minimum of 15 years in jail.

Nicholson was given a $500,000 personal bond. She is scheduled to appear for a probable cause conference at 8:30 a.m. Sept. 7 and an exam hearing at 8:45 a.m. Sept. 12.

As of press time, Nicholson did not have an attorney listed.
