WARREN — Warren resident Paul Bey earned a hole-in-one at Maple Lane Golf Club on Sept. 20 during an early morning round.

As conditions proved to be colder than usual and the green showcased some frost, Bey went a club up from his usual approach on hole No. 2.

“That day the wind was coming at us,” Bey said. “Usually I’d hit a 7-iron, but I went with a 6-iron.”

Standing 155 yards out, Bey heard the ball strike the flagstick. Bey said he’s done this many times, so he didn’t think much of it when he couldn’t locate his ball as he approached the green.

“I’ve hit the flagstick, but it never went in the hole,” Bey said. “As we’re driving up, I’m looking at the sides of the green and I’m not seeing anything; I figured I might as well check the hole.”

And there it was.

“Just pure excitement,” Bey said. “I’m just kind of disappointed there weren’t more people around.”

Bey’s friend, and Warren resident, Gary Simon, was able to witness the feat.

With 35 years of golf on his resume and now a hole-in-one, Bey said there’s one more thing left on his list.

“Now I have to get an albatross,” Bey said. “I’m getting older, so my chances are winding down.”
