Troy man arrested after shot fired at vehicle

ROCHESTER HILLS — A Troy man has been arrested after a bullet shattered a Jeep window in a traffic incident Dec. 9.

According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, shortly after midnight, a 29-year-old Rochester resident was returning home from work on westbound South Boulevard, near John R Road, when she encountered another motorist who was driving erratically. She told investigators that she tried to keep her distance, believing the driver to be impaired, but ultimately attempted to pass him, honking her horn at him as she did. 

Investigators said the driver of the other vehicle then rolled down his window and fired a single shot, striking the side mirror of her Jeep Compass and shattering her window. She was not injured. The victim was able to get the license plate of the other vehicle and reported the matter to the police. 

The vehicle was registered to Cortez Ulysses Taylor, a 29-year-old Troy resident, who police said was arrested after a short foot chase by members of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fugitive Apprehension Team about 4:30 p.m. 

The Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team, helicopter, drones and K9s were all used in the search for the suspect. 

He was not armed when taken into custody. However, police said he did “vigorously fight with the deputies,” leading to minor injuries for one of the detectives. 

“I am proud of the tireless work our team put into this to ensure this dangerous individual was quickly arrested before anyone was killed,” Sheriff Michael Bouchard said in a press release.

Bouchard said detectives believe the shooting was random, since the gunman has no known connection to the victim. Detectives did recover the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting.

No court dates have been scheduled yet for Taylor. Taylor had yet to retain or be assigned an attorney prior to press time.
