SHELBY TOWNSHIP — On Nov. 5, the Shelby Township Police Department lost one of its members.
The department is mourning the passing of veteran Sgt. Daniel Kammerzell, who passed away suddenly at the age of 51 while on duty.
Kammerzell was found unresponsive in his patrol vehicle. He was later pronounced deceased at a nearby hospital. The Police Department said that his death did not involve any suspicious or criminal circumstances. Kammerzell had been a member of the Shelby Township Police Department for the last 18 years.
Before coming to Shelby Township, Kammerzell was a member of the Detroit Police Department and a United States Marine Corps veteran. The department stated that Kammerzell was highly decorated for his work. Throughout his career in Shelby Township, he was an evidence technician, a field training officer, a detective, a range instructor, a training coordinator, a founding member and assistant team leader of the Shelby Township Tactical Response Unit, and a member of Metro Macomb SWAT.
According to the department, Kammerzell always came to work in a great mood and would make people laugh with his jokes. The department said that his families, “both blood and blue,” needed privacy and time to mourn.
“We thank you Sergeant Kammerzell for your dedication to this community. Rest in peace, brother, you will be greatly missed,” the department stated in a post on crimewatch.net.
A donation page has been set up through the Collin Rose Memorial Foundation to help Kammerzell’s family. Anyone wishing to donate can do so through Facebook at facebook.com/donate/1778786722490836 or by writing a check to the Collin Rose Memorial Foundation and dropping it off at the Police Department’s front desk at 52530 Van Dyke Ave. Any questions regarding donations can be addressed to Jordan Haughee at jhaughee@shelbytwp.org.
“His employee number was 570 so we've set that as our initial fundraising goal. This is a dedicated fundraiser for our supporters and the public to help the Kammerzell family. All proceeds will be forwarded to his widow and daughter to use as they see fit,” reads a post on the Facebook page, which is administered by the Collin Rose Memorial Foundation.
The foundation said in its post that Facebook pays all the processing fees, “so 100% of your donation goes directly to the cause.” According to the page as of Nov. 10, more than $12,000 had been raised.
Checks written to the Collin Rose Memorial Foundation also can be mailed to Officer Collin Rose Memorial Foundation, 18640 Mack Avenue #361307, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48326.
