Shelby Township Police Department promotes officer to sergeant

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Police Department recently promoted one of its veteran officers to a higher rank.

Ted DeMeritt, who has been with the department since 2016, was promoted to sergeant in November.

Prior to coming to Shelby Township, he was a police officer and a sergeant with the Oakland University Police Department.

“I am excited about this promotion and the opportunities that it presents. This gives me more of an opportunity to work with our new officers in a mentoring/training role. Prior to promotion, I was a field training officer charged with training new officers who are hired on at Shelby. As a sergeant, I will have the opportunity to continue to train in a supervisory/mentoring role (rather) than just the (field training) officer role,” he said in an email interview.

He said with this new role, he looks forward to all the learning that comes with the job.

“I am looking forward to learning the job of sergeant and continuing to develop myself while serving the community of Shelby Township,” he said.

Sgt. Mark Benedettini, from the Shelby Township Police Department, said the department would like to congratulate DeMeritt on his achievement and the opportunities that are now available to him with this new role.

“We would like to congratulate Sgt. DeMeritt on his promotion and wish him well on his new position in the department,” Benedettini said via email.
