BIRMINGHAM — After a scoreless first half in a football contest at Birmingham Seaholm High School Sept. 1, a second half showdown between Seaholm and U-of-D Jesuit would be one for the books.
An interception from Seaholm junior Jack Lewis would be the game-changing swing Seaholm needed to come away with a 21-20 win in overtime.
“There’s no question it turned the tides,” Seaholm coach Jim DeWald said. “There’s no question.”
Tied up at 14, Jesuit controlled the ball inside the Seaholm 10-yard line with just under a minute left. As Jesuit went for the game-winning score, Lewis had other plans as he picked off the Jesuit quarterback.
With both teams having scored 14 points apiece, Seaholm ran out the clock, and the game headed into overtime.
A touchdown pass from junior quarterback Colton Kinnie to junior Kyle Robbins early in overtime resumed the scoring.
Kinnie’s touchdown throw was Seaholm’s lone passing attempt in the win.
Jesuit tacked another touchdown on the board, but failed in its two-point conversion attempt, as Seaholm would escape with the victory.
Robbins opened up the scoring with a 27-yard rushing touchdown in the first possession in the third quarter. Robbins finished with seven carries for 130 yards and two touchdowns.
“I think he’s just a good athlete,” DeWald said. “He loves the game and he loves his teammates, and he works his tail off in the offseason.”
Jesuit responded on the ensuing drive, but Seaholm answered once more with a touchdown run from senior Jack Hulgrave.
In typical fashion, Jesuit responded immediately with a kickoff return for a touchdown on the next play to tie the game up at 14.
Seaholm (2-0) is set to host Auburn Hills Avondale (1-1) at 7 p.m. Sept. 9.
