Saturday crash kills two, injures others in Sterling Heights

STERLING HEIGHTS — A crash that occurred Saturday afternoon involving six vehicles left two deceased and several injured.

At 6:18 p.m. April 12, Sterling Heights police and firefighters were called to a crash involving multiple vehicles at the intersection of 15 Mile and Schoenherr roads. According to a press release from the Sterling Heights Police Department, the collision caused a fire in one vehicle and another vehicle rolled over.

When first responders arrived, they found a gray Ford Bronco fully engulfed. The driver, a 78-year-old Sterling Heights resident, was deceased, according to the press release. Additionally, the driver of a white Ford Taurus was also found dead at the scene.

The second driver is reported to be a 34-year-old Sterling Heights resident.

Sterling Heights firefighters also provided care to a 56-year-old Oklahoma resident who was driving a blue Dodge Durango that had rolled over. According to the press release, the driver sustained injuries during a self-extrication of the vehicle.

A 33-year-old Sterling Heights resident who witnessed the crash also sustained injuries attempting to rescue the driver of the Bronco, the release states.

“The initial investigation revealed that the Bronco was rear-ended by the Taurus at a high rate of speed, causing it to be pushed into 15 Mile and Schoenherr road traffic,” the release states. “Four other vehicles were struck by either the Bronco or the Taurus.”

In total, six vehicles were involved in the crash, the release states.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and it was unknown whether drug or alcohol use was involved, the release states. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call the Sterling Heights Police Department Traffic Safety Bureau at (586) 446-2920.
