ROSEVILLE — Denise Brun had been encouraged many times by others in the community to consider serving on the Roseville Community Schools Board Of Education.
Brun eventually took them up on their suggestion.
At the April 17 school board meeting, the board members voted 6-0 to appoint Brun to the school board. Immediately afterward, board Secretary Joseph DeFelice administered the oath of office to Brun.
“When the opportunity recently presented itself, my husband and daughters told me I needed to finally go for it … and here I am,” Brun said. “I look forward to helping the district ensure they continue to provide a quality, forward-thinking education for our kids, because that’s certainly what they deserve. I really feel Roseville looks toward the future for the students, not just for today, but what they will need a year from now, five years from now.”
Brun was appointed to fill a vacancy after board member Michael Anderson moved out of state and resigned his position. The vacancy had been posted, and the last day to apply was April 14. Brun’s term will end Dec. 31, 2024.
Brun’s husband, Paul, and their two daughters, Justine, a Roseville High School freshman, and Jacqueline, a college freshman at Wayne State University, were in the audience at last week’s board meeting.
“My freshman in college started with the district at Kment Elementary the very first year that it was opened. She went to kindergarten and then graduated from the high school last year. She was actually valedictorian; we’re very proud of that,” Brun said. “My younger daughter is a freshman at the high school. She is actively involved with the marching band. My husband, Paul, is a great dad and a great husband. I am just glad to be here supporting the community even more.”
Prior to joining the board, Brun volunteered in various capacities in the district, including in the library at Kment, on the Kment and Eastland Middle School’s Parent Teacher Organizations and for the Roseville High School band.
“It has allowed me to interact with the kids a lot more, and I got to know the parents in the schools and community,” Brun said.
“She has been active in our schools for a long time,” board President Theresa Genest echoed. “Denise volunteers quite a bit in our community and will be an asset to our community.”
The other elected officials welcomed Brun to the board, as did Superintendent Mark Blaszkowski.
“Your commitment to the district and helping us in many fashions is appreciated. I’m sure you will continue to help us do that as well,” Blaszkowski said. “Congratulations on being a part of our team.”
