WARREN — The cause of a train derailment in Warren remained under investigation at press time Sept. 30. However, neither foul play nor a traffic crash was thought to be contributing factors.
At approximately 7:30 a.m. Sept. 29, Warren police and firefighters were dispatched to the area of Schoenherr and Stephens roads. Upon arrival, they observed 12 of the train’s 151 cars had derailed from the tracks, according to a press release from Warren police.
The only materials that leaked from the derailed cars were ethanol alcohol and hydraulic cement, both of which are nontoxic, nonhazardous and do not present any major environmental concerns, the release stated.
Canadian National Railway owns the railway and was overseeing cleanup efforts, with assistance by the Warren police and fire departments. As of Friday morning, cleanup was expected to be completed late Saturday, after press time.
There were no injuries.
“Thankfully we do not have any injuries or any major environmental concerns as a result of this train derailment,” Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said in the release.
