WARREN — One person died after a vehicle traveling at least 50 mph crashed into a pole Aug. 22, according to Warren police.
At approximately 3:45 a.m. Aug. 22, Warren police and fire were dispatched to the area of Eight Mile Road and Groesbeck Highway regarding a single-vehicle crash. When officers arrived, they found a 1992 Mercury Cougar that had crashed into a metal utility pole and sustained severe damage, according to a press release from the department.
The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been identified as Devin Smith, 28, of Harrison Township.
According to Warren police, Smith was traveling southbound on Groesbeck approaching Eight Mile when he lost control of his vehicle, struck a curb and crashed into the pole. He was not wearing his seat belt, and there is no evidence of braking prior to impact, police said.
While an exact speed hasn’t been determined, it has been determined it was at least 50 mph, police added.
“It is unfortunate when somebody loses their life in a traffic crash,” Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said in a statement. “It is all too often that speeds and lack of seatbelt use contribute to persons being seriously injured in traffic crashes.”
No other vehicles were involved, and there were no other injuries.
