Red Cross ‘Sound the Alarm’ program runs until May 6
METRO DETROIT — The American Red Cross has joined forces with local public safety departments, businesses and government for “Sound the Alarm,” which began April 15 and runs until May 6.
Through Sound the Alarm, the Red Cross and its community partners will install free smoke alarms in people’s homes. The smoke alarms are made possible by donations to the Red Cross.
The Red Cross also will meet with families to create a two-minute fire escape plan and share safety information about home fires and other local disaster risks. A fire escape plan should include at least two ways to exit every room in the home and be practiced twice a year.
Sound the Alarm is part of the Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which was launched in 2014 to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries by installing free smoke alarms and teaching families about home fire safety.
The Red Cross recommends having a smoke alarm in place on each level of your home, including inside and outside bedrooms and sleeping areas. Smoke alarms also should be tested once a month, and the batteries should be changed at least once a year.
Smoke alarms older than 10 years should be replaced.
