BERKLEY/ROYAL OAK — A man was found dead by police after he was involved in a car crash at 10:17 a.m. Aug. 10 near Coolidge Highway and Webster Road in Berkley, near the border with Royal Oak.
According to police, a 79-year-old Southfield man was driving north on Coolidge at a high rate of speed when his car clipped the rear end of another vehicle as it was starting to approach the turn near Webster.
“The vehicle then veered off the road and crashed into the apartment complex on the Royal Oak side and (the driver) was pronounced dead at Beaumont Hospital,” Berkley Public Safety Detective Lt. Andrew Hadfield said. “The initial indication is that he may have passed prior to the crash and that the crash itself was not a factor in the death.”
Hadfield said that police do not suspect alcohol or drugs were involved at this time. Hadfield also said there was one person in the apartment when the crash occurred, but the person was not hurt.
