Electronic waste collection event scheduled

GROSSE POINTE SHORES — Got an old TV set, stereo or computer collecting dust in the basement? Now you can save it from going into a landfill while freeing up space in your home for something else.

Residents of Grosse Pointe City, Grosse Pointe Farms, Grosse Pointe Park and Grosse Pointe Shores are invited to bring their unwanted electronic items to an electronic waste day collection from 9 a.m. to noon Nov. 12 in Grosse Pointe Shores. Drop-off will take place at Osius Park, located across the street from Shores City Hall at 800 Lake Shore Road.

The Shores is hosting the event this year. Shores Department of Public Works Director Mike Way said the electronic waste collection was made possible by the four cities’ approval of a recycling contract with GFL.

“We’re hoping for a good turnout,” Way said.

Items that will be accepted include computers and computer accessories, cellphones, landline phones, printers, radios, CD players, stereos, TVs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, fax machines, game consoles and accessories, typewriters, word processors and most items with a power cord.

Items that will not be accepted include latex and oil-based paints, household hazardous waste, weapons, ammunition, fireworks, explosives, flares, industrial and commercial waste, compressed gas cylinders, radioactive waste, garbage, tires, yard waste, medications, syringes, appliances, major appliances, and anything containing freon.

“There is no cost,” Way said. “You just have to prove that you’re a resident (of one of the four participating communities).”

To do that, participants need to bring their driver’s licenses with them.

At press time, there was no limit on the number of items that residents could bring with them to drop off.
