BIRMINGHAM — People can spend their Thursday afternoon downtown surrounded by art in some of their favorite stores.

STERLING HEIGHTS — An official groundbreaking ceremony for the American Islamic Community Center took place in August 2020, and the goal has been to build an estimated 20,000-square-foot facility to be a community center and mosque in Sterling Heights.

GROSSE POINTE CITY — For anyone who likes fresh cupcakes, cider, doughnuts and bagels, a new business with all those things — and more — is coming to The Village this fall.

GROSSE POINTE FARMS — People who enjoy dining outdoors at longtime local favorite Irish Coffee Bar & Grill, at 18666 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe Farms, will now be able to do so even when it’s not a sunny day.

METRO DETROIT — Many hospice and assisted living facilities are putting out a call for volunteers and staff to help them care for those in need.

TROY — On Sept. 22, the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation unveiled the first of four new fully electric buses that will be going into service on the road this month throughout metro Detroit.

FARMINGTON — The city of Farmington is hoping that a business currently for sale in its downtown district turns into a potential redevelopment opportunity for the city.

OAKLAND COUNTY — Oakland County Parks and Recreation is developing plans to possibly convert the Red Oaks Golf Course into a walkable park with open space, trails and other amenities.

NOVI — The staff at Novi Meadows Elementary School, on Taft Road, south of 11 Mile Road, commemorated the construction of their very own building by autographing a beam Aug. 30 that will be used as part of the foundational structure above the office of the new school building.

ROYAL OAK — After the Royal Oak City Commission unanimously approved a five-story planned unit development requested by the property owner of the Main Art Theatre on May 23, demolition crews got to work in July.

ROYAL OAK — In October, the city of Royal Oak will begin a fall tree-planting program along residential easements and in city parks in an effort to restore the tree canopy.

PLEASANT RIDGE — A second marijuana facility has been approved by the Pleasant Ridge City Commission.

METRO DETROIT — Last year, many child care centers across Michigan were forced to close their doors due to financial strain and limited staff, but this year, local centers say their business is booming.

LATHRUP VILLAGE — The Lathrup Village City Council decided to hold off on an offer for the former location of the House-in-the-Woods.
