Blossom Heath pier project continues

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Work on the Blossom Heath Park pier project continued into November with ongoing improvements, restoration work and the expected addition of new features.

Work began in the summer of 2021, and the estimated grand opening is set for next spring, barring any setbacks. The St. Clair Shores Tax Increment Finance Authority secured a $6.6 million bond to largely fund the project and additional funds will come from the American Rescue Plan Act.

Community Development Director Denise Pike said, “This project will add to our lakefront, and we are excited for the residents and the community. It will be an amazing destination for locals, as well as visitors to St. Clair Shores.”

There are many features of the project that will not only enhance the area but will also increase the stability of the pier and shoreline into the future. The project scope includes the restoration of the deteriorating seawall. Stone pilings were added at both ends and the center of the pier to protect from ice flows.

Leading out to the 400-foot extended pier is a new road that includes a boardwalk. There are two shade structures on the extended pier, and part of the plan is to finish a new entrance gate.

“The entire project will make a very positive impact on residents of St. Clair Shores and increase the quality of the community landscape and real estate,” said St. Clair Shores City Manager Dustin Lent.

The area will be lit by LED lights, and new trees and landscaping will go in next spring. Lent emphasized that this endeavor was a collaborative enterprise that will add value to the area.

“One of the best enhancements will be the increased pedestrian and handicap accessibility to the pier,” he said.

Other planned or considered amenities are benches, tables, trash cans, bike racks and wheelchair accommodations.
