ROYAL OAK — The Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce will fire up its clay, glass and metal show, called “Art of Fire,” from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, June 11, and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 12.

This year marks the 27th annual juried art fair. It will take place in the parking lot at Sixth and Main streets and feature approximately 74 booths and over 100 artists from around the country.

The show was canceled in 2020 due to the pandemic, and the chamber reignited a spaced out, demonstration-free version of the show last year. This year, there will be demonstrations as well as hands-on opportunities for attendees to create their own artwork.

“This is a great family event to introduce your kids into the art world,” said Heather Zeller, director of events for the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, in a prepared statement. “It’s a one-of-a-kind art show where you’ll find the most unique and functional art made from the earth using fire. You can watch the art being made and even take your turn creating some unique art of your own.”

Shelly Kemp, executive director of the Royal Oak Chamber of Commerce, said the organization made a choice many years ago to not group each of the three categories of art separately, but rather intersperse clay, glass and metal booths together.

“We definitely have a mix (of artists),” Kemp said. “At this point, everything is full speed ahead.”

Kemp said that the chamber also decided not to bring in food vendors, but rather encourage attendees to frequent the local eateries and shops in the city’s downtown. She added that the show takes place within the city’s social district, so the public can stroll with alcoholic beverages in the marked footprint.
