FERNDALE — A Canton woman is in stable condition after being struck by a vehicle in Ferndale.

At approximately 11:44 a.m. July 6, local authorities responded to northbound Woodward Avenue, near East Lewiston Avenue, for a call reporting a personal injury accident.

According to Ferndale police, a 2019 Ram pickup truck hit the Canton woman, 73, while she was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection.

“She was walking southbound along Woodward, you know, just continuously going down Woodward and crossed over the side street right there,” Community Engagement Officer Jill Mahlmeister said. “That’s when the truck hit her. So she wasn’t going across Woodward or anything.”

The vehicle was driven by a 33-year-old Ferndale man.

“The truck would have had a stop sign, which he did stop and then proceeded to turn onto Woodward,” she continued. “She was walking in the crosswalk and the other driver just didn’t see her.”

The woman suffered serious injuries as a result of the crash and she was taken to a local hospital. Police initially described her condition as “critical,” but as of July 7, she was now in stable condition.

“She’s doing well today after her surgeries,” Mahlmeister said.

Police stated that the crash investigation is active and open.

“Our investigators are looking into it,” added Mahlmesiter. “Just the preliminary investigation revealed the driver …  was not under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.”
