METRO DETROIT — On Jan. 8, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced an art contest for the 2024 State of the State program cover.

The governor is challenging Michigan’s K-12 students to come up with a creative design for the program cover following the theme, “A Classic Michigan Story.”

“Michigan’s story can be seen in our people’s stories—the ones who worked hard to build a brighter future for themselves and their families,” Whitmer said in a press release. “The proposals in this year’s State of the State address will reflect our shared values and commitment to making the next chapter of our story the best one yet. That’s why I’m challenging students across the state to tell us their stories in the design for the State of the State art contest. I can’t wait to see all the artwork!”

The 2024 State of the State address will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24. Submissions will be accepted exclusively through the online system and must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, January 14.

Students are encouraged to be as creative as possible and are welcome to use a wide range of supplies ranging from crayons, markers, paints, or any other materials. To submit a design, those interested can visit www.michigan.gov/artcontest and follow the instructions on their webpage.

The student artist who creates the winning design for the 2024 State of the State program will receive a gift box from Cherry Republic.
