TROY — An attempt to stop a suspect in a stolen vehicle ended with shots fired near Big Beaver Road, west of Daley Drive, Nov. 21.
According to the Troy Police Department, officers were alerted to a stolen vehicle at 3:15 p.m. through the Flock camera system. The vehicle was reported stolen from a Southfield car dealership on Nov. 6. Officers proceeded to make a traffic stop on that vehicle while it was stopped in traffic. They attempted to box in the stolen vehicle, but the driver began to ram his way out of the police cruisers toward one of the officers who had exited his vehicle to make the arrest, police said.
“The officer fired five rounds from his service weapon and struck the driver in the upper body one time. Of note, during the investigation all five rounds fired were accounted for within the suspect vehicle,” the department said in a press release. “The suspect vehicle continued a short distance before crashing into another vehicle. Officers were then able to take the driver and passenger of the stolen vehicle into custody and give medical aid.”
Of the five shots, the department confirmed only one struck the suspect. It hit him in the “upper body.”
The suspect, identified as Cecil Bobby Pulliam, a 25-year-old Detroit man, was given aid and was transported to a hospital, where he was placed into custody.
As of Nov. 29, police said Pulliam was still hospitalized and in stable condition. A passenger in the suspect’s vehicle, identified as Lajuan Lamarr Jefferson Jr., a 20-year-old Detroit man, also was treated for minor injuries the department said were caused by the suspect’s attempts to ram his way clear of the police. Jefferson Jr. was released from the hospital but was taken into custody on two active felony warrants from nearby jurisdictions.
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office was asked to step in and take over the investigation of the matter, which is common practice in the event of an officer-involved shooting.
Westbound Big Beaver was closed at Daley Drive as the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office completed their on-scene investigation. It was reopened to traffic shortly after 9 p.m.
Pulliam was charged with one count of felony assault, one count of receiving and concealing stolen property and one count of fleeing and eluding. Bond was set at $1 million, no 10%. Jefferson was charged with one count of receiving and concealing stolen property, and his bond was set at $100,000, no 10%.
Neither suspect had retained or been appointed an attorney.
