MACOMB COUNTY — A police pursuit that ended with a single-vehicle crash closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 94 Monday morning.

At approximately 3:15 a.m. April 7, Sterling Heights police received a 911 call from a resident that their vehicle was being stolen from a driveway near Metropolitan Parkway and Dequindre Road, according to a press release from the department. As officers arrived in the area, they received a notification from the city’s Flock camera system that the vehicle was still in the area. However, according to the release, as they were checking the area, a second vehicle — a black Dodge Charger — drew attention from the officers.

“The Dodge Charger appeared to be attempting to elude our officers,” the release states.

When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it fled and the pursuit began, the release states. Officers used stop sticks twice in an attempt to slow the vehicle but were reportedly unsuccessful.

The vehicle fled through Warren and entered eastbound Interstate 696, then southbound I-94. The vehicle continued until it lost control near the Nine Mile Road exit in St. Clair Shores.

“The suspect vehicle lost control, crashed and the suspect was ejected from the vehicle,” the release states.

The suspect is a 27-year-old man from Detroit, the release states. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition.

The incident is being investigated by the Sterling Heights Police Department and Michigan State Police. A State Police spokesman deferred further comment to Sterling Heights investigators.
