EASTPOINTE — A pedestrian was fatally injured when he attempted to cross a road outside of a designated crosswalk and was struck by a passing vehicle.

The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. May 26. Eastpointe police officers were dispatched to the area of Nine Mile Road near Shakespeare Avenue on word of a pedestrian who had been hit by a vehicle. The caller informed dispatchers that the pedestrian was seriously injured.

Officers arrived at the scene at approximately the same time as paramedics, who immediately conveyed the pedestrian to a local hospital. The pedestrian — a 60-year-old Eastpointe man — had suffered a potential head injury. He died from his injuries later that day, police said.

An investigation revealed that the pedestrian was struck when he allegedly tried to cross Nine Mile Road near Shakespeare Avenue in a construction zone outside of a crosswalk.

The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene, police said, and cooperated with detectives. No alcohol or drugs appeared to have been involved. Anyone who might have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the detective on the case at (586) 445-5100, ext. 1022.

Eastpointe Police Lt. Alexander Holish said pedestrians must always be vigilant when walking near traffic and not assume that drivers will see them or yield to them.

“Please, always try to cross the street at the crosswalk. Follow traffic signals while doing so. Always use the sidewalk, and double-check for vehicles traveling on the roadway before crossing,” Holish said. “The Eastpointe Police Department wants to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.”
