SOUTHFIELD — The Michigan Wildlife Council hosted its first-ever Harvest to Table Gala Oct. 1 at the Great Lakes Culinary Center, 24101 West Nine Mile Road, showcasing the hunting, fishing and foraging heritage in Michigan and the role these natural resources play in addressing hunger statewide.

ST. CLAIR SHORES — Halloween fun and giant skeletons will again greet eventgoers at the Downtown Skelebration in St. Clair Shores this year.

NOVI — The Hindu festival of Navaratri is celebrated over a nine-day span every fall, typically in October. During the festival, women traditionally have Golu (religious doll displays) set up in their homes and invite friends and family to view them.

SOUTHFIELD — Bright orange T-shirts lit up the municipal lawn Oct. 6 as over 500 participants gathered for the fifth annual Walk to Raise Awareness of Domestic Violence, hosted by the city of Southfield, the Southfield Police and Fire Departments, 46th District Court and community partners.

ROYAL OAK — The Detroit Zoo is hosting several spooky events throughout the month of October to celebrate the spirit of Halloween.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Grosse Pointe Woods residents and others in the community have a new outdoor amenity they can enjoy year-round.

FERNDALE — The next show at the Ringwald Theatre will see the actors position themselves at a campfire.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — In 2022, domestic violence took the lives of more than 100 Michigan residents. Domestic violence crimes account for almost 40 percent of police calls, and 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been physically abused by an intimate partner.

HAZEL PARK — David Monastiere has always loved Halloween and the creativity it inspires. The horror-themed musician, who goes by the stage name “Slasher Dave” and even illustrates his own vinyl album covers, sees the same love for the season each year in his hometown of Hazel Park.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP/UTICA — The Kiwanis Club of Utica-Shelby Township is starting off the spooky month with a pumpkin painting party from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 13. This free event is open to the community and will include yummy treats, mini pumpkins and painting supplies.

WEST BLOOMFIELD — Around 50 years ago, a conversation that took place at a picnic on the campus of Orchard Lake St. Mary’s led to what has become a staple for history buffs in the area.

WARREN/TROY — Although Debbie McClain prefers to fly “under the radar” for her volunteer work as president of the Prisoner of War Committee of Michigan, one local group took notice of the compassion and care she gives to the project.

HARRISON TOWNSHIP — On Saturday, Sept. 28, the 2024 edition of the Save the Manatee 5K took place at Lake St. Clair Metropark amidst damp conditions. As imperfect as such conditions are for outdoor events, perhaps it was fitting.

COMMERCE TOWNSHIP — The Glenlore Trails “Enchanted” forest experience, an immersive and interactive Halloween light show, opened for its fourth season on Sept. 21.

SOUTHFIELD — Southfield city officials, the May Peace Prevail on Earth International Foundation, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Task Force gathered Sept. 20 at the Peace Poles on the Municipal Campus, 26000 Evergreen Road, to celebrate the United Nations’ International Day of Peace.
