WEST BLOOMFIELD — What could turn out to be a long-standing tradition is set to begin at Orchard Mall Dec. 10.
The West Bloomfield Police Department, Orchard Mall, Toyology and Premier Pet Supply are partnering for a Toys for Tots drive noon-6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Orchard Mall.
It is the first time that the Orchard Mall and the West Bloomfield Police Department have partnered for a Toys for Tots event.
Aside from toys for children, donations to the Oakland County Animal Shelter will also be accepted, with items set to be stuffed into West Bloomfield Police Department vehicles.
“That day, that Saturday, we’re gonna have officers out there with some of our bigger trucks,” said Officer James Pettinato. “We’ll turn on the lights for you. Kids can hop in the back seat if they want, and we’re gonna be collecting toys and donations for the animal (shelter). We’ll make a big, fun event out of Saturday.”
Although it has not been officially confirmed, there may be a surprise in store for those who choose to attend.
“We might have a couple special vehicles out there, but we’re still waiting to hear on that,” Pettinato said. “We will have police vehicles and possibly a special vehicle.”
The event is scheduled to take place regardless of weather conditions.
“We’re thrilled to be a part of it — anything we can do to give back to the community, we’re happy to be a part of,” said Kelly Woodley, who is the Orchard Mall property manager. “Our mall was supported and weathered the storm of the recent pandemic, and we want to do our part to give back, as well.”
Individuals who want to contribute to the Toys for Tots drive can donate new and unwrapped toys.
Items not accepted are toy guns or weapons of any kind, including slingshots.
Stuffed animals or stuffed toys of any kind are also not encouraged to be donated.
Acceptable donations for the Oakland County Animal Shelter include towels, blankets, bound carpet samples, quality dry food for cats or dogs, canned cat or dog food, cat litter and pans, pet carriers, pet toys, leashes, collars, and food dishes.
Between now and Dec. 10, items for Toys for Tots can be donated 24/7 at the West Bloomfield Police Department and during business hours at the Orchard Mall.
Prior to Dec. 10, according to Woodley, Premier Pet Supply, which is located inside the Orchard Mall, can hold donations for the Oakland County Animal Shelter.
Pettinato has given some thought to the meaning behind the event.
“It’s great to be able to give back to someone that’s in need during the holiday season,” he said. “Whether it’s animals or whether it’s children, it’s nice to give something a little more when they don’t have much at all. … I think it’s important to remember those out there that need help during this holiday season.”
West Bloomfield Police Department Deputy Chief Curt Lawson also weighed in on the inaugural event.
“We are excited to partner with Toyology, Premier Pets and the Orchard Mall to provide toys to children and needed supplies for sheltered pets this holiday season,” Lawson stated via email. “Come join us and bring some cheer to those in need this holiday season.”
