MACOMB COUNTY/OAKLAND COUNTY — The field is now set for the November election in Michigan’s new 10th District of the U.S. House of Representatives.
Democrat Carl Marlinga and Republican John James handily won their respective primaries on Aug. 2.
Marlinga received 28,500 votes (48.5%) in Macomb County. He was followed by Rhonda Powell, who had 10,097 votes (17.2%). Warren City Councilwoman Angela Rogensues received 7,798 votes (13.3%). Huwaida Arraf received 6,941 (11.8%), and former state Rep. Henry Yanez received 5,428 votes (9.2%).
In Oakland County, Marlinga received 4,155 votes. Arraf received 1,905 votes; Rogensues received 1,705; Powell received 1,299; and Yanez received 465.
Marlinga, 75, a 40-year resident of Sterling Heights, previously served as Macomb County’s prosecutor from 1985 until 2004. He went on to serve as a probate judge from 2013 to 2016 and a circuit court judge from 2017 until February 2022.
“I’m very gratified. We thought we would do well; we just didn’t know we would do this well,” Marlinga said. “I’ve been in contact with my opponents in the Democratic primary. We’re going to have a unified campaign going into the fall. I’m very gratified for their support.”
On the Republican side, James received 54,172 votes in Macomb County, or 85.7% of those cast in the party primary. His lone opponent, Tony Marcinkewciz, received 9,058 votes (14.3%).
James received 9,247 votes in Oakland County, while Marcinkewciz received 1,022.
“I am grateful for the overwhelming support of folks in this district,” James said in a statement. “Voters are excited to send an ethical leader to Washington, with experience where it counts, to help at home.”
James, 41, has been a resident of Farmington Hills for 20 years and hasn’t previously held any elected offices. He unsuccessfully ran as his party’s nominee for U.S. Senate in 2018 and 2020.
Michigan’s 10th congressional district covers Rochester Hills, Shelby Township, Clinton Township, Sterling Heights, Warren, Center Line, St. Clair Shores, Fraser, Mount Clemens, Utica, Harrison Township, Roseville and Eastpointe.
