METRO DETROIT — Veterans Day has been celebrated in the United States on Nov. 11 for more than 100 years, and this Friday, local communities in the C & G Newspapers coverage area will continue that tradition of honoring those who served.
Berkley
At 11 a.m. Nov. 11, Veterans Day, the Berkley American Legion Stanley J. Fons Post 374 and the Berkley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9222 will host an outdoor ceremony at the Berkley War Memorial just outside City Hall, 3338 Coolidge Highway.
After the ceremony, the American Legion will host a Veterans Day service at noon in its parking lot, 2079 12 Mile Road in Berkley. Lunch will be provided afterward for $7 for community members and free for veterans. For more details, visit berkleymich.org/calendar.
Center Line
The Center Line High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps will host a Veterans Day ceremony from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in the school’s auditorium, 26300 Arsenal St.
The annual ceremony is conducted by the cadets and will include speeches, presenting of the colors, the playing of taps, and a slideshow. Refreshments and food also will be served.
Eastpointe
A special Veterans Day program, “A Salute to Our Veterans,” will be held at 6 p.m. Nov. 11 at the Michigan Military Technical and Historical Society Museum, 16600 Stephens Road in Eastpointe. Admission is free. The evening will include a color guard presentation, invocations and more. Ron Tomala will offer a presentation.
Farmington Hills
The city of Farmington Hills Special Services Adults 50 & Better Division will recognize and honor local veterans at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 at the Costick Activities Center, located at 28600 11 Mile Road in Farmington Hills. For more information, visit the event page at fhgov.com.
Novi
Vietnam veteran and Novi resident Allen Bialek, 76, will once again bring his Emmy Award-winning program, “A Veteran’s Salute: Do You Remember Me,” to the people of his hometown. The free program will be held at the Novi Police Training Center, 45125 10 Mile Road, 3:30-5 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Nov. 11.
Bialek, who served in the U.S. Navy from January 1966 to October 1969, strives to raise awareness of what a veteran is and how they have sacrificed for the country. Through the program, Bialek offers the community lessons on citizenship, leadership, character and community service.
Royal Oak
Royal Oak’s Veterans Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Royal Oak War Memorial in the Centennial Commons Park.

Also, a talk at the Royal Oak Historical Society Museum, 1411 W. Webster Road, will take place at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11.
The historical society will present the talk from Maureen Elliot on “the researching of veterans’ genealogical archives and how this will be preserving their memories,” according to a press release. Tickets to the event cost $10. Attendance will be limited to 25.

Sterling Heights
The city of Sterling Heights will observe Veterans Day at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 outside City Hall and the Police Department. For more information, visit www.sterling-heights.net or call (586) 446-2489.
Troy
The city of Troy will host its annual Troy Veterans Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. Nov. 11 in front of City Hall, located at 500 W. Big Beaver.
The program will include the raising of colors, a rifle salute and the playing of taps by the Troy Police Honor Guard; the laying of a memorial wreath; and music by the Heritage Concert Band of Troy. U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Julia L. Nobles will be the keynote speaker.
The public can bring individual flowers, bouquets, small flags and mementos to be placed on the walk of honor or at the base of the monument at Veterans Memorial Plaza. For more information, call Community Affairs Director Cindy Stewart at (248) 524-1147.
Sponsors sought for ‘Salute to Veterans’ event
Residents can help the Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America in its initiative to “Salute Veterans” by acting as a sponsor of the MPVA’s “Salute to Veterans Virtual Run, Walk, Wheel” event, with proceeds going to support the “MPVA’s mission of advocating for civil rights, assuring quality health care, exploring continuing research and education, and encouraging the healthy living of veterans with disabilities throughout the state of Michigan.” The event is set to run until Nov. 18.
