Angry man knocks down store’s candy, throws it
STERLING HEIGHTS — A convenience store in the 36000 block of Mound Road reported Jan. 6 that a male customer was mad that an air refill machine was taking his money but not working.
When the man was told to call a customer support phone number for a refund, he allegedly knocked candy bags to the floor, threw candy outside into the parking lot and allegedly was making threatening comments before taking off in a gray Chevy Equinox vehicle.
Items stolen while homeowner on vacation
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — In the early hours of Jan. 6, a break-in allegedly occurred when the home’s occupant was on vacation in Jamaica.
The victim told Clinton Township police that she was first notified of the break-in when she saw fraud alerts for credit cards and noticed three people walking around her North Nunley Road home through surveillance camera footage.
The victim said an $80,000 engagement ring, a safe with $30,000 in Pandora jewelry, seven boxes of Louis Vuitton purses estimated at $150,000, a Cartier watch, and Xbox and Nintendo Switch video game consoles were stolen, according to the report. She believes her husband may be responsible for the break-in due to a bad divorce, though the report lists no suspects.
Shoplifting suspect stuffs drone in pants
STERLING HEIGHTS — On the night of Jan. 22, police investigated a shoplifting incident involving multiple suspects allegedly concealing merchandise at the Walmart at 33201 Van Dyke Ave., near 14 Mile Road.
Upon learning about the suspects from dispatch, police reportedly caught one running out of the store’s doors, arrested him and reportedly found a Taurus pistol in his possession.
Police also learned that another suspect reportedly had hidden a $149 drone in his pants. However, the man dropped the drone when store staff stopped him near the front door, police said.
Driver of alleged stolen vehicle arrested
ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 6:07 a.m. on Jan. 26, St Clair Shores officers were dispatched to assist the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office with a stolen vehicle report in the 3000 block of Harbor Place Drive.
A suspect allegedly led the police on a chase in the stolen vehicle and later on foot when the vehicle got stuck in the snow trying to avoid police at a dead end.
The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody. It was later discovered that the suspect had an outstanding warrant for absconding parole.
Chainsaws stolen
ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 5:50 p.m. on Feb. 14, in the 31000 Harper Avenue, officers responded to an incident where three chainsaws were stolen.
Upon arrival, officers spoke to an employee who stated that two unknown suspects entered the store, took the chainsaws and left without attempting to pay for the merchandise. A second employee provided descriptions to the officers and said that they left in a white vehicle.
The employees were given a copy of the report number.
Almost $1,000 in Nike clothes stolen
STERLING HEIGHTS — Two female suspects allegedly shoplifted $995 worth of Nike clothes from Kohl’s, 44200 Schoenherr Road, Feb. 3. The suspects allegedly hid the merchandise in a purse and additional bags before leaving without paying.
They reportedly got away in a gold Chevrolet Equinox toward the direction of the nearby Steak ‘n Shake before witnesses lost sight of their vehicle. Police investigated the area but couldn’t find the vehicle.
Safe, piggy bank raided at home
STERLING HEIGHTS — A burglary reportedly happened sometime between 9:15 a.m. and around 8:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at a home in the 5000 block of Woods Drive, near 14 Mile and Mound roads.
The victim reportedly noticed the basement lights being on upon return as well as open doors upstairs that had been closed earlier that day. A bedroom safe and a piggy bank were also broken and raided, police said.
According to police, cash, a wedding ring, necklaces and other jewelry were stolen. Police spotted pry marks on some doors. Police said they had no suspects.
Woman scammed out of $1,000 after being told sister is hostage
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 3:02 p.m. Jan. 30, officers were dispatched to the 12000 block of Culver Drive, near 21 Mile and Schoenherr roads, for a fraud report. The caller stated that she had received a phone call from an unknown man. The man told her that her sister was being held hostage and he needed $1,000; otherwise, he would hurt her sister. The caller then withdrew $1,000 from her bank account and wired money to a location in Mexico. Shortly after sending the money, she spoke to her sister on the phone, and her sister informed her that she was OK and that the phone call was a scam. Police were investigating.
Audi stolen during test drive
STERLING HEIGHTS — Police heard that a white Audi Q7 was stolen the night of March 5 outside a bank in the 4000 block of 17 Mile Road, near Ryan Road. The vehicle reportedly had been advertised on Facebook Marketplace, and the seller met with an assumed buyer outside the bank. The seller reportedly gave the other person the keys to test drive the vehicle, but the assumed buyer reportedly didn’t come back, even after an hour.
Police told neighboring jurisdictions to be on the lookout for the vehicle.
Violin stolen
GROSSE POINTE PARK — A rented violin valued at $925 was stolen from the vestibule of a residence in the 1300 block of Lakepointe Street between midnight March 1 and 11:59 p.m. March 7.
Jeep crashes into business, flees
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 11:25 a.m. March 17, officers were dispatched to a business in the 51000 block of Van Dyke Avenue for a malicious destruction of property report. When the owner came to work, he discovered the front door of the business damaged. A review of security footage showed a white Jeep run into the building. The Jeep is seen driving into the building, then backing up and exiting the parking lot onto Van Dyke. Police were investigating and were trying to find the owner of the Jeep.
The buck stops at the Bell
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — A case of counterfeit cash spending unfolded before workers at the Garfield Road Taco Bell on the evening of Feb. 25.
The suspect ordered a small meal and presented a $100 bill. Staff began questioning the validity of the banknote, and the suspect drove off in a Honda sedan without his questionable cash or the meal.
Driver found sleeping on steering wheel
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to Walmart, 51450 Shelby Parkway, for a welfare check of someone sleeping in a vehicle in the parking lot at 7:45 a.m. April 1. Officers arrived and observed a male driver slumped over the center console sleeping.
The vehicle appeared to have two flat tires and was running. Officers opened the door and woke the driver up. Officers asked him if he was OK, and he reportedly replied, “drinking.” When officers asked him how he got to that location on two flat tires, he reportedly again replied “drinking.”
The driver had slurred speech and emitted a strong odor of alcohol, according to police. Officers then had the man exit his vehicle to perform field sobriety tests. After completing the field sobriety tests, the man was offered a preliminary breath test, which he refused to take. Officers then placed him under arrest for operating while intoxicated, second offense. He was transported to the Police Department, at which point a search warrant was obtained to draw blood from the man to determine his blood alcohol content.
Job application possibly leads to bank fraud
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — On April 1, a resident came into the Police Department to file an identity theft report. She stated that she recently applied for a job posting that she saw on Facebook. Shortly after applying for the job, she was asked for her name, address, Social Security number and signature from a woman communicating with her online claiming to be from the employer. She complied and sent over the requested information. The next day, her bank notified her that there had been some fraudulent activity on her account. She suspects that whomever she sent her personal information to was able to access her bank account. Police were investigating.
Car chase stopped
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Clinton Township police officers were tapped in to help stop a suspect fleeing Roseville police on the evening of April 6.
The suspect was fleeing after an alleged felony assault, and police were able to eventually stop the suspect’s Pontiac. A handgun was found in the suspect’s pocket, the license for which expired in 2020.
Both the suspect and the gun were turned over to Roseville police.
A parade of dumpster fires
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — On April 10, residents around the Metro Woods apartment complex reported three dumpster fires in the area.
One witness claimed a dark car was being driven around the complex. Clinton Township police officers spoke with someone in the area, though no arrests were made.
Upset man yells at hotel
STERLING HEIGHTS — A “highly upset” man reportedly was yelling and threatening staff in a hotel lobby along Van Dyke Avenue April 23.
The hotel reported that the man had reserved a room at another hotel and went to the wrong place. According to police, staff later said the man left, and police were no longer sought for help.
Police respond to customer trouble
GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Police were called to a restaurant in the 18000 block of Mack Avenue at around 1:53 p.m. April 19 regarding an angry customer who was reportedly armed with a gun and causing a disturbance.
The customer, a 38-year-old Roseville man, was said by restaurant staff to have told them he was going out to his vehicle to get his gun because he was upset about the wait time and getting a cold hamburger. Police said the customer was frisked and found to not have any weapons on him, so he was told to leave the restaurant and not return.
During the process of investigating this incident, police said they spoke with a 41-year-old Detroit man who had witnessed a verbal argument between the customer and a restaurant staff member. The Detroit man was found to be wanted on an outstanding felony warrant out of 37th District Court in Warren for fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. The Detroit man was arrested on the warrant.
Officers join chase
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — Clinton Township police officers were tapped in to help stop suspects on the run from Detroit police on May 9.
After reports of a red Honda Civic driving recklessly came in, officers spotted the car on the shoulder of Village Road with an out-of-state license plate. After officers turned on their lights, suspects drove the car toward 15 Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue, drove onto the grass outside a gas station, hit curbs, and drove into a pharmacy parking lot before hitting a lamp post and flipping the car. Officers got the suspects out of the car and arrested them as flames were noticed coming from the vehicle, which was later “fully engulfed in flames.”
The car was allegedly connected to a stolen vehicle report out of Detroit, with teen suspects. Police later learned that the two suspects were 11 and 14 years old.
Delivery deception
CLINTON TOWNSHIP — On May 5, a man walked into the FedEx store on Gratiot Avenue, showed identification and picked up packages for Ahee Jewelers.
A manager later called to inquire about the state of the packages. FedEx told the manager the packages were picked up, but the manager said nobody had permission to pick up the packages.
Juveniles pretend to ride bikes from Flint to Sterling
STERLING HEIGHTS — A caller told police May 6 that four juvenile bicyclists who “looked lost and excitable” by the Sterling Heights Nature Center were saying they lived in Flint and had ridden all the way to Sterling Heights. Police later learned that the juveniles were all Sterling Heights residents, and they reportedly were just fooling with the caller and thought the caller was laughing and taking it as a joke. Police took no further action.
Prop money used for real purchases
GROSSE POINTE CITY — Police said a pair of unknown suspects made eight purchases of less than $10 each over the course of several hours at Panera in The Village May 16 using $100 bills for each purchase and receiving more than $90 back in change each time. Police said the suspects were using movie prop $100 bills. A report states that the same cashier was responsible for each of these transactions.
Man arrested after tampering with beverages
GROSSE POINTE FARMS — A 26-year-old Detroit man is said to have tampered with beverages at the McDonald’s at 18201 Mack Ave. in Detroit and then did the same with a water bottle at Village Food Market across the street at around 9:15 a.m. May 29.
According to a police report, the suspect poured an unknown substance into beverages in an employees-only area at McDonald’s just before they were going to be served to customers. He is then said to have opened a bottle of water for sale at Village Market and poured something in it that turned the water pink.
The suspect told police that he needed to give people “the cure” and was following a directive from his god to add this substance to beverages to heal people. The suspect was cited for retail fraud for taking the water bottle and tampering with it without paying for it, and he was transported to a nearby hospital for a psychological evaluation.
Chip theft suspect arrested
GROSSE POINTE FARMS — A 48-year-old Detroit man is facing possible third-degree retail fraud charges after he allegedly stole a bag of Better Made Hot Chips valued at $2.29 from a gas station at Mack Avenue and Moross Road at around 3:52 p.m. June 1. According to a police report, the suspect hid the bag of chips in his underwear and tried to leave the store but was confronted by a clerk. The clerk is said to have removed the chips from the suspect’s pants, at which point the suspect is said in the report to have “proceeded to fall to the ground in the grocery aisle closest to the exit.” Police found the suspect lying on the floor when they arrived.
Police identified the suspect from the medical bracelet on his wrist — he had just been discharged from Ascension St. John Hospital across the street before this incident. The suspect had another warrant against him out of the Farms for third-degree retail fraud from 2022, but police found no prior retail fraud convictions against him. The suspect smelled of alcohol and agreed to take a preliminary breath test, which showed he had a blood alcohol level of 0.264% — more than three times the legal limit for a motorist. He was arrested on the previous warrant as well as trespassing and a new retail fraud charge, a police report states.
Shaving cream fight reported
STERLING HEIGHTS — During the morning of June 9, at least one juvenile was reported to be in the median around the intersection of Schoenherr and 19 Mile roads. A juvenile was reportedly engaged in a shaving cream fight and stepped into the road at some point, police said. Police arrived around noon and said the situation had “cleared out.”
Banned hospital patient returns
GROSSE POINTE CITY — A 50-year-old Detroit man was issued a trespassing ticket after police said he went to Corewell Health, Beaumont Grosse Pointe, on June 22, despite the fact that he had previously been banned from the hospital. However, a police report states that the suspect was accidentally scheduled for surgery at the hospital. Police were called to the hospital after the suspect refused to leave. He departed from the property after he was given the trespassing ticket, police said.
Motorist pulled over for driving with no front tires
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 11 p.m. July 2, an officer in the area of Mound and West Utica roads observed a vehicle traveling in the roadway without both front tires, causing a great deal of sparks on the roadway. The vehicle was being driven on its two front rims.
The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle. After talking to the driver, the officer asked him to take field sobriety tests; he agreed. After completing the tests, the driver was offered a preliminary breath test, and the results were 0.145% blood alcohol content. The driver was then placed under arrest for operating while intoxicated and transported to the Police Department.
Lululemon reports multiple larcenies
GROSSE POINTE CITY — A Lululemon store that recently opened in The Village at 17101 Kercheval Ave. has been targeted by thieves multiple times. Police said that at around 6:30 p.m. July 7, two young men wearing masks are said to have collected “armfuls of clothing” and exited without paying, fleeing northbound on St. Clair Avenue in a red Dodge Avenger.
At around 2:20 p.m. July 6, a woman and two men are said to have worked as a team to steal what police said was a “large amount” of clothing from the store before exiting and fleeing northbound on St. Clair in a black Ford Escape.
At 1:20 p.m. July 6, two young men are said to have collected an estimated $2,400 worth of clothing and left without paying, fleeing the scene in a waiting Jeep, possibly a Cherokee model.
Boat partially sinks after pump lines cut
ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 12:37 p.m. on July 24, a report was made about property damage that occurred between July 16 and July 24 in the 24000 block of Jefferson Avenue.
Upon arrival, the officer spoke to the victim, a 42-year-old man, who stated that when he had his boat docked during the said times, an unknown suspect cut the lines that operate the pump. The boat was reportedly taking on water, causing it to sink due to the lines being cut.
According to the report, the marina indicated that the victim would be required to pay $3,500 to have the boat removed because it partially sunk. The victim stated he was unsure about the cost of any repairs. The insurance company was unknown.
Trespassers try to cool off in property’s water
STERLING HEIGHTS — A caller told police July 21 that two male suspects were trespassing on private property near 15 Mile and Schoenherr roads.
The suspects allegedly said they wanted to cool off in some water, despite “no trespassing” signs on the premises. They reportedly drove out of a funeral home parking lot prior to police arriving.
Teens smoke weed in Starbucks bathroom
STERLING HEIGHTS — Police went to Starbucks, 2148 Metropolitan Parkway, Aug. 6 upon hearing that two males and two females, all between 16 and 17 years old, were occupying the bathroom and smoking in it.
The teens reportedly had left by the time police arrived. The bathroom stank like cannabis but was undamaged, police said. The store reportedly wanted the teens to never come back. Police said they ended up finding one of the male teens, and they passed along the store’s message.
Man badly injures self by punching window
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Shelby Township police officers were dispatched to the 8000 block of Mary Ann Avenue, near 22 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue, for a domestic violence report at 8:55 a.m. July 28. Upon arrival, officers spoke to the caller, who stated that her ex-boyfriend had arrived at the residence while she was visiting with her friend. The ex-boyfriend reportedly began to pound on the garage door, and he then ripped the handle off a storm door and punched a hole in a glass door after she refused to come outside to talk to him, according to the police report.
The ex-boyfriend received a large cut on his hand from punching the glass door. Police officers placed a tourniquet on the man due to excessive bleeding, and the Shelby Township Fire Department transported him to the hospital. A warrant request was submitted against him for malicious destruction of property.
Brawl broken up in median
GROSSE POINTE FARMS — An officer on patrol intervened when he came upon two men fighting each other in a median in the 18000 block of Mack Avenue at 4:24 p.m. Aug. 11. The two men — a 51-year-old from Palmetto, Georgia, and a 20-year-old from Harrison Township — had gotten into a verbal confrontation after the Georgia man claimed the Harrison Township man cut him off in traffic, nearly causing an accident.
While the vehicles were stopped at a red light at Calvin Road, the Harrison Township man is said to have gotten out of his vehicle to approach the Georgia man. Both men told police the other man started the physical attack. A crowd of outdoor diners nearby had witnessed the entire scene but only one agreed to share what they had seen with police. The witness told police both drivers got out of their vehicles simultaneously and began yelling and cursing at each other, saying things like, “You want some of this?” and “I’ll beat your a--.”
Both suspects were arrested and issued citations for disorderly conduct. The Harrison Township man needed to be taken to a nearby hospital for a shoulder injury sustained during the brawl.
Man attacks cannabis delivery driver
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — At 9:40 p.m. Aug. 19, police officers were dispatched to an unarmed robbery that had occurred at an apartment complex in the area of West Utica and Ryan roads. The victim worked for a cannabis delivery service and was delivering 1.25 ounces of cannabis, valued at more than $400, to an apartment in the area, according to the police report.
When the delivery person rang the doorbell of the apartment, no one answered the door. The delivery person then began to walk back to his car, at which point a male suspect appeared from around the corner and punched the delivery person in the head, knocking him to the ground. The suspect then stole the bag of cannabis and took off running, according to the report. The detective bureau was investigating the case.
Customer steals TV, pepper sprays employee
SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Officers were dispatched to Walmart, 51450 Shelby Parkway, on a retail fraud and assault report at 1:27 p.m. Aug. 20. Upon arrival, officers spoke with an employee who had witnessed a female suspect exiting the store with a TV at the patio and garden entrance. When the employee asked the suspect if she needed any help, the suspect responded, “No.” The suspect then proceeded to walk out the garden exit without paying for the TV, which set off alarms.
The employee then called her supervisor to notify her supervisor of the situation, at which point the suspect ran up to the employee and sprayed her with pepper spray. The suspect then loaded the television into a waiting vehicle and fled the scene prior to police arrival. The detective bureau was investigating.
Fast-food customer evicted after sitting on counter
STERLING HEIGHTS — Police were called to a Burger King in the 5000 block of 15 Mile Road, near Mound Road, the morning of Aug. 20 because a manager wanted a male customer kicked out of the restaurant.
The manager reportedly said the customer was ordered to leave, but he allegedly seated himself on the counter and “demanded service.” According to the report, the customer had also recently “caused a disturbance in the lobby” and smeared a substance — police redacted which kind — on the walls.
The man reportedly left once police arrived to enforce the restaurant’s trespass request.
K-9 track leads to arrest
ST. CLAIR SHORES — Officers responded to the 32000 block of Robeson Street at 1:24 a.m. on Sept. 2 after a woman claimed an unknown man was rummaging through her vehicle.
The woman claimed she woke up and noticed someone shining a flashlight through her 2013 Hyundai Elantra and walked outside and screamed at the suspect.
The suspect fled the scene but not without snatching some of her boyfriend’s belongings.
The 21-year-old male victim said he had a 10 mm Glock G29SF in a backpack in the back seat along with several credit cards that were stolen from the vehicle, which the couple said was unlocked.
Officers deployed the K-9 unit, which started to gain traction eastbound on the north side of Fisher Drive near a wooded area. An officer located the suspect behind a dirt pile and ordered him to show his hands, and the suspect complied.
Officers were able to arrest the suspect and retrieve the handgun along with a Jeep key fob as well.
Shirtless males engage in road rage scuffle
STERLING HEIGHTS — On Sept. 4, occupants from two vehicles, a silver Kia and a gray Ram, were reportedly involved in a road rage dispute along Metropolitan Parkway as the vehicles drove westbound from around Schoenherr Road to Van Dyke Avenue and beyond.
According to a witness, young, shirtless male occupants hung out of the vehicles’ windows and attempted to hit each other, and that led to a physical fight, police said. Police said the witness then lost sight of the vehicles.
Angry customer with dog ejected from business
STERLING HEIGHTS — Police said a belligerent man argued with staff at an auto part business in the 7000 block of 18 1/2 Mile Road Sept. 3.
The suspect reportedly came with a dog, and staff wouldn’t let him enter the lot due to safety concerns. Police said the man reportedly grew mad, got in workers’ faces and said that he was with a service dog, though he allegedly yelled, swore and charged toward the staff when asked to provide paperwork proving the dog’s status.
After the man was ordered to leave, he reportedly backed out his car and inched it toward a worker before taking off, police said. The business said the suspect won’t be allowed back and will call police if he returns.
Dancing man makes workers uneasy
STERLING HEIGHTS — A man reportedly refused to leave a business in the 14000 block of Hall Road Sept. 4 while dancing, talking about 13 Mile Road and making workers uncomfortable. Police said the man left before they could investigate.
Feud at salon
EASTPOINTE — According to a police report, officers were dispatched to a local business sometime on Sept. 23 in response to a fight and theft that had taken place there. The business is a salon located in the area of 10 Mile Road.
A 19-year-old woman reportedly had an eyelash appointment and had paid a $20 deposit. Once the technician realized the business did not have the requested eyelash color, the client allegedly asked for her deposit back. The technician reportedly told the client that the deposit was nonrefundable, reminding her that she had been advised of this when she signed up for the appointment.
That’s when the client allegedly left the establishment and returned a short time later with her 41-year-old mother, who demanded that her daughter’s deposit be returned. When the employees at the salon refused to comply, the mother reportedly went to the display rack and started to grab perfume and candle boxes that were for sale. She allegedly told the employees that she was getting her daughter’s money back.
The suspect also took an employee’s cell phone, which had been sitting on the salon counter. When the salon employees tried to stop both customers from leaving the store, a fight took place, during which a standup mirror was broken. Both suspects then fled the scene prior to officers arriving.
The suspects were identified, police said, and a detective was assigned to the case.
Former employee goes on destructive tirade
GROSSE POINTE FARMS — A 20-year-old Detroit man is facing multiple possible charges after he reportedly went on a destructive rampage at a store where he used to work when he learned he was being fired.
According to a police report, at around 4:07 p.m. Sept. 17, the suspect was at his former place of employment — a store in the 18000 block of Mack Avenue — when he started yelling insults at a male former co-worker. The suspect is then said by his former co-workers to have grabbed a bottle of wine worth $18 from the sales floor and thrown it on the ground, causing it to shatter. The suspect is said to have verbally threatened and harassed a female cashier and swung a plastic shopping basket around, causing an estimated $20 worth of damage to two ornamental flower arrangements.
The report states that the suspect continued to lash out at a co-worker near the store entrance, and once the suspect and the co-worker were outside, the suspect is alleged to have taken a fighting stance and balled his fists and raised them as if he were about to hit the co-worker. The suspect is said to have spat in the face of his co-worker as this point.
The suspect was arrested walking nearby and is facing possible charges including assault and battery, malicious destruction of property and disorderly person. The suspect was also permanently banned from store property, or he would face trespassing charges.
Police said the suspect was “highly agitated.” After he was put in an ambulance to be taken to the hospital for bleeding wounds on his hands, he reportedly demanded sexual acts from emergency medical personnel. Given the suspect’s state and demeanor, the paramedic on the ambulance said he would be seeking a mental health evaluation at the hospital for the suspect.
Soap theft suspect makes clean getaway
GROSSE POINTE CITY — Police were investigating after an unknown suspect is said to have stolen an estimated $95 worth of soap products from The Village CVS store at around 3:30 p.m. Nov. 2.
Driver arrested
EASTPOINTE — According to a police report, Eastpointe officers conducted a traffic stop at Eight Mile Road and Gratiot Avenue at around 11:15 p.m. Oct. 7. A driver was found to have two valid warrants for his arrest, but he refused to exit the vehicle when instructed to do so and resisted when officers tried to extract him from his vehicle.
At one point, the suspect reportedly tried to take an officer’s Taser. After a brief struggle, the officer was able to retain possession of the Taser, but the suspect managed to put the vehicle in drive and flee the scene, leading to a vehicle pursuit.
Once the pursuit reached dangerous rates of speed, the chase was terminated, but a short time later, the suspect was located in his vehicle by Warren police. Another car chase ensued.
A Michigan State Police helicopter was able to spot the suspect and follow him, and the suspect attempted to flee the scene on foot in Detroit. After a short foot chase, the suspect reportedly was apprehended by Eastpointe and Warren officers.
The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Officer was determining appropriate charges. Eastpointe police said that the suspect also discarded a firearm while fleeing officers, which was subsequently recovered. The suspect was to be arraigned at the 38th District Court.
Man’s self-touching blamed on rash
STERLING HEIGHTS — A man was accused of putting his hand down his pants and fondling himself while strolling around in Walmart at 44575 Mound Road Oct. 8. The caller reportedly worked in another store and said the man had allegedly exposed himself before.
Police said they talked to the man, who reportedly said he had jock itch, and police told him to be considerate of other nearby people if he needs to scratch. Police added that store staff kept an eye on the man but “had no issues with him.”
Ironing board blamed for jammed door scare
STERLING HEIGHTS — After midnight Oct. 8, a resident along Schoenherr Road, south of 19 Mile Road, told police he suspected something suspicious after he tried to open his mother’s bedroom door but couldn’t get inside due to it reportedly being “forcefully pushed shut.” The mother was reportedly away, and nobody was supposed to be staying there.
Police used a K-9 to investigate, and the dog reportedly detected a human odor by the bedroom door. But once police managed to make their way inside, all they reportedly found was an ironing board that had fallen off the door. Officers concluded that nothing suspicious had happened.
Man arrested on felony warrant
GROSSE POINTE FARMS — Police arrested a 40-year-old Detroit man at Pier Park at around 10:05 p.m. Oct. 4 after he tried to enter the residents-only park. According to a police report, the man claimed he was en route to his brother’s apartment, which he insisted was in the park, even pointing toward what he believed was the correct building. Police told the man this was a municipal park, not an apartment complex, but the man insisted he had been there earlier and needed to return. Police checked the man’s identification and discovered he was wanted on a felony bench warrant for a probation violation out of 3rd Circuit Court in Detroit for carrying a concealed weapon. The man was arrested on the warrant.
Police arrest suspect who allegedly stole nitrous oxide
ST. CLAIR SHORES — At 5:25 p.m. on Nov. 5, a report was made about a retail theft that occurred on the same day in the 28000 block of Harper Avenue.
Upon arrival, an officer spoke with the caller, an employee, who stated he had multiple pictures of the suspect vehicle and its license plate. The suspect had come into the store twice that day. The first time, he purchased a canister used to generate whipped cream with nitrous oxide gas, worth around $100. The second time he came in, he stole another canister and walked out without paying. The employee said this suspect has stolen from them in the past.
The officer spoke to the owner over the phone who stated he wanted to prosecute the suspect since he didn’t listen to his previous warnings. The officer told the owner to save the photos and security footage for detectives. Another officer spoke briefly with the suspect over the phone.
A sergeant was able to locate the suspect at an apartment complex. He was parked behind the buildings. The two officers could see the suspect, a 45-year-old man, sitting in the driver’s side, apparently inhaling nitrous oxide. The vehicle was locked, and he was told multiple times to unlock it. The suspect continued inhaling and refused to open the door.
Eventually the suspect opened the door but refused to get out of the vehicle. An officer took the canister out of the suspect’s hands. The suspect grabbed onto the steering wheel at the same time and refused to exit the vehicle as another officer tried to pull the suspect out of the driver’s side.
A struggle ensued before the officers and sergeant were able to get the suspect out of the car, into handcuffs and into the rear seat of a police car without further incident. The suspect’s vehicle was impounded. The vehicle next to the suspect’s vehicle was scratched and the owner was notified and gave officers their information for insurance purposes.
On the way to the police station, the suspect was informed multiple times he was no longer welcome at the business and that he would be charged for trespassing if he showed up. The suspect reportedly said he understood.
Loud patron evicted from library
STERLING HEIGHTS — Police went to the Sterling Heights Public Library, 40255 Dodge Park Road, Nov. 17 and talked to a librarian who reported that a patron was still raising her voice after being told to stop, and that she reportedly had caused problems before.
Although the patron had allegedly been resisting a request to leave, she eventually calmed down and left the library, police said.
