SHELBY TOWNSHIP — Cub Scout Pack 92 hosted its first public Pinewood Derby Jan. 13 at the Packard Proving Grounds in Shelby Township.
This was a significant milestone, as it was the first time that Pack 92 allowed non-Cub Scouts to participate in the derby races. Pack 92 consists of Scouts from Monfort and Beacon Tree elementary schools.
The day’s festivities included races, creative crafts and family fun. Despite the winter weather, Pack 92 saw a decent turnout.
Den Leader April Fici said they had quite a few racers show up.
“There were a total of 30 cars, including six participants from the community. All in all, we held 120 races,” she said.
Attendees weren’t only local to Shelby Township, but came from all around the metro Detroit area.
She said they saw a lot of activity outside of the races.
“We had a craft table where kids could make cards for seniors at nursing homes and a Boy Scout from Troop 156 was teaching others how to tie knots. We also received generous donations from Sky Zone, Urban Air and Sherwood Brewery to give away during our raffle. All proceeds went towards funding for Pack 92,” she said.
Tina Volrich, the Packard Proving Grounds’ event coordinator, said that despite the snow and frigid temperatures, “these kids were ready to race.”
“The heat was on inside Packard Proving Grounds with race after race. Congratulations to all who made the day a whole lot of fun for the kids and parents,” she said.
Just Love Coffee Café donated coffee for attendees to enjoy during the event.
The winners of the derby from Pack 92 were David Fici in first place, John Williams in second place and Lucas Pouget in third place.
