BIRMINGHAM — This year, staff and administrators at Birmingham Public Schools spent part of their summer preparing for the upcoming year through a leadership planning event.

BIRMINGHAM — Everything Birmingham has to offer will soon be displayed online through 360-degree images, drone footage, videos and graphics in the Skyway Interactive virtual tour of Birmingham.

MADISON HEIGHTS/ROYAL OAK — More than 7,000 people in the cities of Madison Heights and Royal Oak were left without power when a fire broke out at the local DTE Energy substation.

WARREN — One person died after a vehicle traveling at least 50 mph crashed into a pole Aug. 22, according to Warren police.

ROYAL OAK — At approximately 9:35 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, the Royal Oak Police Department received a 911 call regarding a robbery in progress at Dynamic Care Pharmacy, 4119 W. 13 Mile Road, east of Greenfield Road.

MADISON HEIGHTS — The city of Madison Heights is working with its two school districts to install police officers at each campus who will provide an extra layer of security for students and staff.

HAZEL PARK — In 2020, one of the bright spots amid the pandemic was the Marigold Project. The walk-through art exhibit was built in Hazel Park from thousands of flower blooms, many of which came from the Michigan Urban Farming Initiative.

FARMINGTON — A Farmington Public Schools special education teacher was recognized this year by the Council for Exceptional Children for her work on behalf of children and youth with disabilities and/or gifts and talents, according to a district press release.

FARMINGTON — In February 2019, at the age of 38, Farmington resident Heather Landis was diagnosed with breast cancer.

OAKLAND COUNTY — On Aug. 10, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted to put a measure on the November ballot for all Oakland County residents to decide whether they wish to approve a new millage and opt into an agreement with the Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation as a county instead of on a community-by-community basis.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — In the latest addition to Heritage Garden in Shelby Township, the Shelby Gardeners Club installed birdhouses and colorful flowers.

METRO DETROIT — Michigan’s trees haven’t shed their foliage yet, but it’s not too soon to start preparing to deal with piles of dead leaves all over the lawn.

FRANKLIN — For several years, downtown Franklin has been awaiting a renovation to its streetscape. Construction has finally concluded, and the village is preparing a celebration to enjoy the new safe and clean downtown Aug. 24. 

UTICA — Cathryn DeRouchie, of Scouts BSA Troop #1402, has a special project planned in Utica as she seeks to become an Eagle Scout.

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Police Department is inviting the public to its upcoming Police Department open house.

UTICA — A suspect is in custody who police say was exposing himself to women on the bike path that connects Utica to Shelby Township and Sterling Heights.

UTICA — Trinity Lutheran School in Utica is inviting the community to celebrate its 140th anniversary with an event at 10 a.m. Aug. 28.

FERNDALE — The rev of the engines soared around downtown Ferndale as the annual Woodward Dream Cruise celebrated its 27th year.

WARREN — Eighteen-year-old Blake Lyons found an artistic way to pay tribute to his grandfather Robert James Lyons, who died in November 2021.
