WARREN — A Warren man is facing charges after being involved in an overnight standoff with Warren police last month.
At approximately 11:30 p.m. July 25, Warren police responded to a call from a citizen who stated they were being shot at from a location on Schoenherr Road north of Eight Mile Road.
In a press release sent by the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, a St. Clair Shores man was walking on Schoenherr Road when he saw a green laser dot on his chest. The defendant, 55-year-old Anthony Mangiapane, allegedly shouted a racist insult before firing three shots.
The victim was on the phone with a witness who heard the gunshots. He was not injured.
When officers arrived, they found a 55-year-old man, identified as Mangiapane.
After the police were called, Mangiapane reportedly barricaded himself inside a business with his 43-year-old girlfriend, Warren Police Commissioner Bill Dwyer said.
Negotiators began talking to the man at around 12:15 a.m. July 26 and continued throughout the night. At 4:30 a.m., the Warren Police Special Response Team was activated, and at approximately 6:25 a.m., the suspect surrendered, Dwyer said.
Investigators reportedly found a round from an M203 grenade launcher among a cache of weapons that included pistols, shotguns and AR-15-style rifles with high-capacity magazines. A rifle equiped with green laser sighting was also reportedly found, as well as Nazi memorabilia and what may have been a German Luger pistol, the press release stated.
Mangiapane was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony; ethnic intimidation, a two-year felony; assaulting, resisting or obstructing a police officer, a two-year felony; and felony weapons offenses. He was arraigned July 27 by Visiting Judge Michael Maceroni, who set a $500,000 cash/surety bond.
The woman with him at the scene was arrested to be interviewed by detectives but is not currently facing charges.
Mangiapane was scheduled for a probable cause conference at 8:45 a.m. Aug. 9, after the Warren Weekly went to press, in front of District Court Judge Suzanne Faunce. At press time, he did not have an attorney listed in court records.
