SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Parks, Recreation and Maintenance Department hosted a scarecrow contest this month that resulted in a winner Oct. 21.

Visitors to the Shelby Township municipal campus were able to view the scarecrows that were placed around Heritage Lake, and they also were available for viewing at www.shelbytwp.org/contests. The township announced the winning scarecrow on the website and its social media on Oct. 21.

The winner of the contest was Thor, by World of Floors, with 1,746 votes. Second place was Dr. Dziurgot, by MCDental Care, with 1701 votes.

The Shelby Gardeners Club, which maintains Heritage Garden on the municipal campus, entered a scarecrow called “Gertie Goes on Vacation.”

“She loves to explore the world. Gertie the world traveler,” explained Ivy Schwartz, the Shelby Gardeners Club publicist, in an email.

Many local businesses, organizations, individuals and families contributed scarecrows to the contest.

There was a total of 4,947 votes cast in the contest.

“Gertie Goes on Vacation” received 122 votes.

Nadine Thacker, the Shelby Gardeners Club program director, said that the Shelby Garden Club scarecrow represents not only the club, but also the interest the club has in traveling to see all things gardening and nature.

“Many in the club have traveled far and wide. Gertie was lovingly restored this year for the scarecrow contest to represent our interest in traveling,” she said via email.

Eleven township clubs submitted entries that are now gracing the township grounds.
