SHELBY TOWNSHIP — The Shelby Township Police Department is searching for a suspect who broke into a party store in Shelby Township.

The break-in happened at 6:20 a.m. July 21 at a store near Van Dyke Avenue and 21 Mile Road, and although officers reportedly arrived within two minutes, the suspect had already fled the scene. A K-9 unit was called in and searched for the suspect, but they were unable to locate the suspect at that time.

The burglar took cash from the party store.

Sgt. Mark Benedettini, of the Shelby Township Police Department, said via email that investigators are reaching out to businesses and the community to see if anyone saw anything or might have tips.

“The Detective Bureau is still investigating this incident. They are following up with area businesses and residences trying to obtain more video of the suspect to help identify them,” Benedettini said.

The one image of the suspect that Shelby Township police released was somewhat blurry and had low resolution. The suspect appears to have a heavier build and to be wearing a light-colored hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, a face mask and gloves.

Benedettini is asking that anyone with any related information reach out to the department.

“If anyone noticed anything suspicious in the area during the time that the break-in occurred, please contact our department,” he said.

The number to call with information is (586) 731-2121, ext. 333. Anyone with tips also could email jhaughee@shelbytwp.org.

Benedettini said that police found some evidence that might help the investigation.

“We haven’t identified the suspect yet, but we have located some evidence that will hopefully help to identify him at some point,” he said.
