TROY — Shield’s Restaurant and Pizzeria customers have been asked to submit pizza recipe ideas for a contest that will support Lighthouse of Oakland County.

The contest invites people to submit pizza recipe ideas for a chance to win gift certificates for Shield’s. Some of the winning picks have included a Polish recipe with sauerkraut and a philly cheesesteak pizza.

“The summer pizza bake off contest always draws dozens of tasty, interesting, and rather unusual recipe submissions,” Paul Andoni, one of Shield’s owners, said. “We look forward to reading all submissions – the crazier, the better. … In the previous years we received over 500 recipes. Some were actually pretty interesting and some were just downright weird.”

One winning entries will earn gift certificates from $100-$200, and the winning pizza will be a featured menu item for one week.

“Depending on how the winning recipe does, it could move to the regular menu,” Andoni said.

Recipe ideas can be submitted until July 14. On Tuesday, July 16 at 6 p.m., the three winning pizzas will be taste tested at Shield’s in Troy. The public is invited to come taste the three final entries at the Troy location for $5 per person, with all proceeds going to benefit Lighthouse of Oakland County.

Shield’s has been in metro Detroit since the 1930s and serves pizza, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, pasta and more at 1476 W. Maple Road in Troy, 25101 Telegraph Road in Southfield, and 5057 Woodward Ave. in Detroit.
