DETROIT — The Detroit Institute of Arts announced its 15th Annual Community Group Art Exhibition, showcasing artwork from human service organization participants across southeastern Michigan.
The exhibition features more than 100 pieces from a variety of art projects created in collaboration with the DIA’s Artmaking Studio, and will be on view Friday, Dec. 8, 2023, through Sunday, Jan. 14, 2024, in the DIA’s Learning Center.
“Programs aimed at engaging participants from tri-county community organizations are integral to our mission at the DIA,” Julie McFarland, the DIA’s executive director of public Affairs and community outreach, said in a press release. “Our Community Group Art program creates opportunities for meaningful experiences through art.”
For more than 25 years, the DIA's Community Group Program has provided guided gallery tours and artmaking experiences with clients of human service agencies across the region working with a variety of groups, including veterans and seniors. This program is designed to create a safe and nurturing environment for participants to express themselves creatively and engage in socialization.
The annual Community Group Exhibition allows participants to proudly share their artistic endeavors with museum visitors, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment.
Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency, which serves Oakland and Livingston counties, has participated in the DIA’s Community Group Program since 2017, and its Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program will be among those featured in the exhibition.
“The Oakland Livingston Human Service Agency's Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program is proud to partner with the Detroit Institute of Arts on the annual Community Group Program. Our collaboration embodies the spirit of community, heritage, and family,” Lisa Grodsky, the program’s operations manager, said in a press release. “This transformative partnership celebrates kinship caregivers and the relative children in their care. … We are grateful to the DIA for prioritizing collaborations like this that create a brighter canvas for generations to come."
The DIA is located at 5200 Woodward Avenue in Detroit. More information can be found at www.dia.org. General admission is always free for members and residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties
