Detroit man facing charges after Eastpointe shooting

EASTPOINTE — A Detroit man is facing charges for allegedly ambushing a victim and shooting at him in Eastpointe.

Trevion Smith-Johnson, 30, of Detroit, is facing 12 charges for allegedly ambushing the victim at the victim’s Eastpointe home May 8. According to a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office, Smith-Johnson allegedly “pointed a handgun at the victim, and demanded everything he had.”

When the victim refused, Smith-Johnson allegedly shot at him. The victim took cover and Smith-Johnson fired at him four more times, according to the press release.

Smith-Johnson was apprehended shortly after fleeing on foot, according to the press release. He was arraigned May 25 in the 38th District Court in Eastpointe by Magistrate Mark Makoski. Smith-Johnson is facing charges of assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to rob while armed and armed robbery, each of which carries a life sentence; felon in possession of a firearm and felon in possession of ammunition, both five-year felonies; felonious assault with a dangerous weapon, a four-year felony; and six counts of felony firearm, which carry a mandatory two-year prison sentence for each count.

Smith-Johnson was given a $1.5 million cash or surety bond. If released, he will be required to wear a steel cuff tether, be on house arrest, receive a mental health assessment, and refrain from alcohol and drugs. As of June 1, Smith-Johnson was lodged at the Macomb County Jail.

“As Macomb County Prosecutor, I will uphold the law and hold accountable those who choose violence,” Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido said in a prepared statement.

A probable cause hearing is scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 6, and a preliminary exam is scheduled for 8 a.m. Tuesday, June 13. Both hearings are to be held in the 38th District Court in Eastpointe.
