Bloomfield Hills Marian once again captured a Class A regional championship.
The Mustangs beat Clarkston High in four games Nov. 14 for the title. Marian went on to play Romeo High in a quarterfinal after press time. See next week’s and our website at www.candgnews.com for more the quarterfinals.
In its regional semifinal, Marian beat Birmingham Groves 25-12, 25-6, 25-23 Nov. 12 at Lake Orion High.
Groves coach Jenny Brown said she was pleased with her team’s effort.
“We came there to play as one team, and we did accomplish that goal,” she said. “Our third game was our best game. We pulled together and came back. If you’re going to lose to Marian, go out 25-23.”
Brown added that her squad started each game strong but was unable to keep up with the experienced Mustangs.
“I think the fact that this was the first time we were in this situation. Marian is used to be in regionals,” she said. “They’re strong mentally in those aspects, where this was really our first showing.”
The coach said the experience gained playing deeper in the playoffs will only help for next season.
“I guess you could say that this year was hope (that we’d make it that far), next year it’ll be an expectation,” she said. “We plan on coming back to the regionals and going further.”
Brown said the seniors will be missed.
“They set a very high bar for our teams to come,” Brown said. “The last time we won a district was 2004, so to put their class on the board is something to be proud of. It also pushes our juniors to step up next year.”
