STAFF FAVORITES — APRIL 2013:

OAKLAND COUNTY
The journey to save 'J'
Couple is recognized for their generosity as foster parents

About the reporter: Tiffany Esshaki has been a staff reporter for C & G Newspapers since 2011, covering Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Franklin, Bingham Farms and the Birmingham Public School District. She earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Michigan-Dearborn.

About the story: The story of John and Judy Wright, Michigan's 2012 Foster Parents of the Year, is one that will stay with me the rest of my career. Their love and devotion to children in our community, specifically little Jayden, is something that humbled and inspired me and, apparently, many others. In the days that followed the article's publication, I received calls from around the country from people who wanted to do what they could to help the Wright family as well as Jayden's adoptive family. I was honored to share the Wrights' incredible story.

METRO DETROIT
Victim shares tale of child abuse, domestic violence
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

About the reporter: Andy Kozlowski writes for the Madison-Park News, primarily covering the cities of Madison Heights and Hazel Park, as well as the Madison, Lamphere and Hazel Park school districts.

About the story: Waqas Jilani is an incredibly brave person. He was willing to share a very personal tale of how he was abused both as a child and as an adult, in the hopes that raising awareness for the silent menace of abuse will lead more people to detect it when it's happening to others.
