SOUTHFIELD — Southfield High football trailed Farmington Hills Harrison by six points with just under a minute remaining Sept. 27 at home when quarterback Jalen Brady heaved a throw down the near sideline to receiver Devontae Alfred.

“When it was in the air, not to sound cocky, but I knew I was going to get it,” Alfred said.

Alfred caught the ball at its highest point, splitting two Harrison defensive backs and then won a foot race for the 60-yard score, diving outstretched into the end zone.

Kicker Anthony Springer then came on and made the extra point to make it 20-19.

“They made the play they had to make,” Harrison coach John Herrington said.

The Hawks threatened on their final drive, moving into Southfield territory, but Southfield’s Walter Love intercepted a pass with three seconds remaining to ensure the victory.

“That was a very exciting end to a football game,” Southfield coach Tim Conley said. “This league is just so tough.”

The win moves Southfield to 4-1 overall and alone in first place in the Oakland Activities Association at 3-0.

“I’m happy for the kids, and now we have to go back to work. Next week is going to be tough,” Conley said.

Southfield heads to Oxford High at 7 p.m. Oct. 4.

Harrison goes 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the White. The Hawks take on Southfield-Lathrup at 4:30 p.m. Oct. 4 at Lathrup.
