Postseason underway for several local teams

It’s “win or go home” for teams in the Warren Weekly coverage area, as the postseason is now underway in every sport except boys basketball and swimming, which began their playoffs March 3 and March 4, respectively, after press time.

The 2014 Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs are in full swing in hockey, girls basketball, cheerleading, boys and girls bowling, and wrestling.

Here’s a  look at how the local teams had performed at press time.

Bowling teams advance to the state finals
Bowling teams from several Warren schools rolled their way into the 2014 state finals.

The Warren Mott boys team captured a regional title, while the Warren Cousino girls placed second to advance to the state finals. Both teams played in a Feb. 21 regional in Woodhaven.

Mott’s boys tallied 3,898 points to win the regional. Cousino’s girls scored 3,665 to finish second to Belleville, which tallied 3,674 points to win the regional title.

Advancing to the individual finals from Mott and Cousino are Paul Loomis (Cousino), Robbie Bassacchi (Cousino), Mike Davedowski (Mott), Ashley Smith (Cousino) and Hannah Guider (Cousino). Also advancing to the individual finals from the Woodhaven regional was Warren De La Salle’s Steven Palazzolo.

The Warren Fitzgerald boys bowling team advanced with a second-place finish at a D-2 regional Feb. 21 in Westland. The Spartans notched 3,788 points to move on to the state finals. At that same regional, Warren Regina tallied 3,496 points to win a regional title.

Advancing to the individual finals from the Westland regional were: Madchen Breen, Regina; Tiffani Kimbrough and Alec Nunn, Fitzgerald; Courtney Domijan and Brock Walquist, Center Line; and Mitchell Blanchard and Sebastian Wallace, Warren Lincoln.

Cheer teams out in regionals
After strong showings in the district round, the cheer teams from Warren Cousino and Warren Woods Tower saw their seasons come to an end at regional competitions.

Cousino finished ninth at a Feb. 22 D-1 regional at Troy Athens with 756.32 points. Rochester Hills Stoney Creek won the regional title with 781.94 points.

Tower finished 10th in a D-2 regional Feb. 22 at Ortonville-Brandon with 684.38 points.

The top four teams at each regional advanced to the state finals, which took place after press time.

The Warren De La Salle hockey team advanced in the D-2 state playoffs with an 8-0 win over Macomb L’Anse Creuse North Feb. 27 at the Mount Clemens Ice Arena. The Warren Mott hockey team saw its season end in a 9-1 loss to the University of Detroit Jesuit Feb. 25 at City Sports Arena in Detroit. Mott ends the season at 21-5.

The Center Line High girls basketball team met Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy in a Class B district final after press time. The Panthers, which received a bye through the district quarters, got by Clinton Township Clintondale 54-7 in a district semi Feb. 26 at Center Line.

Chandler Park Academy knocked off Warren Fitzgerald in a Class B district semi played Feb. 26 at Center Line.

The Warren Lincoln girls basketball team saw its season end in a 44-39 loss to Clinton Township Clintondale Feb. 24 in a 2014 MHSAA Class B district quarterfinal.

The Warren Michigan Collegiate girls basketball team’s season came to a close in a 53-42 loss to Rochester Hills Lutheran Northwest in a 2014 Class C district quarterfinal Feb. 24.
