Macomb township teams see varying levels of success in playoffs

It’s “win or go home” for teams in the Macomb Chronicle coverage area, as the postseason is now underway in every winter sport except swimming, which began its playoffs March 4, after press time.
The 2014 Michigan High School Athletic Association playoffs are in full swing in hockey, girls basketball, cheerleading, boys and girls bowling, and wrestling.
Here’s a look at how the local teams had performed at press time.
Dakota cheer finishes third at state finals
The Macomb Dakota cheer team took third place in its first appearance at the MHSAA Division 1 state finals. The finals took place Feb. 28 in Grand Rapids.
The Cougars tallied 778.54 points to finish third. Southgate Anderson captured a state title after notching 785.96 points. Grandville (783.54) finished second in the eight-team competition.
Hockey teams fall in district round
Macomb Dakota saw its season end in a 4-1 loss to Rochester United in a Division 1 regional semifinal Feb. 27 at Suburban Ice Macomb. The Cougars, champions of the Macomb Area Conference Red Division, finish the season at 14-10-2.
Macomb L’Anse Creuse North fell 8-0 to Warren De La Salle in a D-2 regional semifinal Feb. 27 at the Mount Clemens Ice Arena. The Crusaders end the season at 4-21-1.
Boys state basketball playoffs underway
The Clinton Township Chippewa Valley boys basketball team squared off against Roseville in a Class A district semifinal after press time. The Big Reds advanced to the semifinal round with a 56-51 win over St. Clair Shores Lakeview March 3 at Roseville. The winner of that matchup advances to a district final set for 7 p.m. March 7 at Roseville.
The Macomb Lutheran North boys basketball fell 50-46 to St. Clair in a Class B district quarterfinal March 3 at St. Clair. The Mustangs end the season at 13-8.
Both L’Anse Creuse North and Dakota received byes through the Class A boys district quarterfinals.
The Crusaders met the the winner of a Port Huron/Anchor Bay matchup after press time. The Cougars squared off against Port Huron Northern after press time, as well. The winner of those matchups meets in a district final set for 7 p.m. March 7 at Anchor Bay.
Girls basketball teams fall in districts
Dakota’s girls basketball team saw its season end in a 42-32 loss to Port Huron Northern in a Class A district quarterfinal Feb. 24 at L’Anse Creuse North. The Cougars end the season at 9-12.
L’Anse Creuse North fell 46-42 to Port Huron Northern in a Class A district semi Feb. 26 at L’Anse Creuse North. The Crusaders end the season at 15-6.
Clinton Township Chippewa Valley fell 41-21 to Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse in a Class A district quarterfinal Feb. 24 at L’Anse Creuse.
The Macomb Lutheran North girls basketball team saw its season come to a close in a 42-34 loss to Richmond in a Class B district final played Feb. 28 at Armada. The Mustangs end the season at 20-3.

Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day
Thanks to two early scores, some lock-down defense, and a touchdown with just 5:25 remaining in regulation, the Beverly Hills Detroit Country Day football team picked up a 20-13 victory against Milan High in a Division 4 regional final on Nov. 14 and earned this week’s Team of the Week honor. Country Day, which had outscored its opponents 78-7 in the district round, advanced to the state semifinals for the second year in a row. The Yellowjackets (11-1) face Flint Powers Catholic (10-2) at 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at West Bloomfield High.
