Farmington High wins team wrestling title
Farmington High’s Jacob Brewer prepares for a match with Hunter Tiuba Feb. 8 in a Division 2 individual district. In the team portion, the Falcons beat Dearborn Divine Child Feb. 6 at home for the title.

According to Farmington High wrestling coach Al Beyar, wins come from a simple a formula: pin your opponent more than you get pinned.

The Falcons were able to do just that in their Division 2 team district, taking the title in dominating fashion.

Farmington beat Dearborn Divine Child 60-14 in the final and Redford Thurston 68-9 in a semifinal Feb. 6 at home.

“I thought we had a good chance to win it. I thought it could be a maybe a little closer,” Beyar said. “We had a lot of pins, and then we didn’t get pinned.”

Up next, Farmington takes on Madison Heights Lamphere in a regional semifinal Feb. 12 at Lamphere.

“That’s going to be a tough match. Like every match, you basically have to have kids not get pinned even if they’re going against competition at a higher level, and then you, hopefully, have seniors and experienced wrestlers get pins for you. It’s going to be close, there’s not a whole lot of room for error there. I’m sure (Lamphere) is probably thinking the same thing.”

Beyar credits his team’s toughness in helping it get to the regional level. The Falcons are 22-12 overall and were 3-4 in the Oakland Activities Association Red Division. Farmington is the only D-2 school in the Red.

“I thought the competition helped them out and made them a little tougher,” Beyar said. “We had a lot of injuries throughout the year, and a lot of people had to step up to fill some shoes, so to be able to do that was a factor (in our success).”

Division 1
Farmington Hills Harrison and North Farmington squads each had their seasons come to an end Feb. 5 at West Bloomfield High.

Harrison lost to the eventual district champ Waterford Kettering 51-19 in a semifinal.

On the other side of the bracket, North Farmington lost to the host 73-6.
