Huge industrial development set to open in 2014

SHELBY TOWNSHIP — It’s official: Shelby Township will be host to the JVIS-USA headquarters building, a global company whose annual sales are $320 million and growing. The development will bring $143,000 in revenue to the township over the next 12 years, as well as 75 to 100 new jobs.
The Board of Trustees unanimously approved a 12-year, 50 percent tax abatement, which was the final step to the installation of the business. The $4 million, 100,000-square-foot building will be constructed in Shelby’s Cherry Creek Corporate Park, off of 23 Mile Road, near the Van Dyke expressway.
Jobs offered at the new building will include sales, product engineering, product design, research and development, testing, product managers, administrative staff and general assembly labor, said JVIS-USA President Jason Murar.
JVIS-USA operates 23 facilities in six countries but has its roots in Macomb County, and more than 600 of its 2,000 employees work in Michigan. The current headquarters is located in Sterling Heights, but the Shelby building will take over that position.
Murar said the core business, which began doing only tooling and manufacturing, now includes everything from design and development services to automobile interiors and electric components, as well as other products such as plastic shopping carts and plastic housing for the U.S. Army.
Key local customers include Chrysler, Ford and General Motors, he said, although 50 percent of products will be shipped out of the country.
Murar credited the development’s Shelby location to developer Eugene D’Agostini, who also helped bring in another large industrial business, Kuka Robotics, in July 2011.
“Gene has been responsible for the building we currently lease in Shelby Township, and I really give him and his family credit for inspiring us to come back with a new and larger building in this area,” Murar said. “He’s done a good job representing the citizens of Shelby, and we appreciate that.”
He said he is hoping the building will be operational by the first quarter of 2014, but the sooner, the better.
Bob Tess, an official from Macomb County’s Department of Planning and Economic Development, said projects of this caliber do not come along every day and face significant competition. He said the agreement was not necessarily a slam dunk, but the company did its due diligence and, overall, he is pleased with the decision.
“We’re very excited we passed the tax abatement and, of course, that means new revenue for Shelby Township,” said Shelby Township Supervisor Rick Stathakis. “We can only be elated that (JVIS-USA) picked Shelby Township, because they were looking at a lot of other areas in the country.”
