Farmington High lacrosse seeing success in season two

ROCHESTER — Farmington High boys lacrosse coach Mike Cahill didn’t know what to expect coming into this season.

But so far, he likes what he’s seeing from his second-year program — it was combined with North Farmington and Farmington Hills Harrison prior to that.

“When I looked at the schedule before the season started, I could have hoped for something like this, but I didn’t know,” Cahill said of his team’s 6-2 record April 21.

“It seemed like we had some pretty good opponents early on. We’ve won some close games, and we’re pleased about that.”

The Falcons were 12-6 last season and return eight players who saw significant time.
Senior captains Zach Petrella and Mikey Garner said it’s that nucleus that has the Falcons on a winning path.

“Last season, we actually lost a lot of kids in the transition, and we had to bring up a lot of the kids from (junior varsity),” Petrella said. “I don’t think they were too sure about themselves last season because they were still new to the game. Now, we’ve pretty much developed them … and they know what to expect this year.”

Another reason for the early season success, according to Cahill, is the play of sophomore Matt Allemang.

The goalie played just one game in net last season on JV before being called upon for varsity duties. Cahill said the netminder is saving 78 percent of the shots sent his way, which is impressive in lacrosse.

“He dove right in (during) the offseason,” Cahill said. “He went to camps, played as much as he could in indoor leagues, and he’s come out gangbusters (in) the beginning of the season.

“To have him play so well for us early has been a real positive. No question about it.”
How good the Falcons can be this season is anybody’s guess. Garner said he believes the best is yet to come.

“We’ve already seen clips of it in some games — where we just play amazing and everything is clicking,” he said. “I think later in the season, if we can get four quarters of it, we’ll be really good and make it pretty far in the playoffs.”
