In celebration of the Woodward Dream Cruise, the cities of Berkley and Huntington Woods will each be holding their own festivities on the evening of August 15.

Berkley will present its annual CruiseFest parade beginning at 6:30 p.m. Featuring more than 400 classic cars, the parade will run along 12 Mile Road, beginning at the Roseland Park Cemetery at Woodward Avenue and finishing at Ellwood Avenue just before Greenfield Road.

There will also be live entertainment, with two bands performing from 7 to 11 p.m. on a stage on Robina Avenue, just north of 12 Mile. A food court will be set up on Robina, south of 12 Mile. Meanwhile, on neighboring Griffith Avenue, there will be a “Street Dance for Kids” beginning at 7:30 p.m.

“We start everything off (for the Dream Cruise),” said City Manager Jane Bais-DiSessa. “We’re the first city to kick things off with a major event.”

Bais-DiSessa said the CruiseFest parade has grown in recent years to become one of the most popular attractions for residents during the hectic Dream Cruise weekend.

“Every year I’ve been here, the crowds have gotten bigger and bigger,” she said. “If anyone is a car buff, this is the parade for them. You’ll see some of the most beautiful classic cars around. It really takes you down memory lane with all these cars you only see in pictures and movies. And it gives you a little bit of historical perspective of what cars used to be and what put Michigan on the map as the Motor City.”

In Huntington Woods, there will be a family-oriented party and concert in the parking lot of the Chase Bank at the corner of Woodward and Salem Road. A band provided by Motor City Casino will supply the music, and residents who pre-register by Aug. 6 will receive a wristband granting them free access to food, beverages and games.

“Our (celebration) is pretty low-key,” said Recreation Supervisor Colette Nutton. “We just want to give our residents a spot to relax and listen to some music while they watch the cars go by. They can sit out there and be a part of it.”
