FERNDALE — There’s nothing fun about seeing a police officer’s blue and red lights in the rearview mirror.
But seeing them up close and personal, from the side of the road, with friends and family around … well, that can be a blast.
On Aug. 15 in front of the Ferndale City Hall, the Woodward Dream Cruise will unofficially begin with the Ferndale Emergency Vehicle Show, an event featuring 130 different vehicles, some in current use and others dating back to as long ago as the 1920s. The event is in its eighth year.
“This is something everybody really seems to enjoy,” said Ed Ungerman, the creator and organizer of the show. “It really showcases the history of emergency vehicles. Some that are still in use today, others that people would have no way of seeing.”
In the first couple of years of the show, Ungerman said the crowd was treated to mostly police vehicles. But over the years, spectators have enjoyed the addition of firetrucks, ambulances and even military equipment.
“It’s cool in the sense that people are seeing a lot of history, a lot of things they otherwise wouldn’t have the chance to experience,” Ungerman said.
Last year, 130 vehicles were on display and Ungerman expects the same amount to cruise Nine Mile Road this time around. Some of the vehicles on display are still owned by their respective departments while others are brought in by individuals who have restored them.
“It’s a family event, really,” Ungerman added. “There will be a number of demonstrations by the police, firefighters, even the SWAT team. It’s going to be a lot of fun for everyone.”
